Al-Hussein Mosque

Al-Hussein mosque was built in 1154 during the Fatimid dynasty. It was named after one of the two grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at the battle of Karbala in 680AD. It is believed that the head of Hussein is buried on the grounds of the mosque. Later excavations of the mosque revealed a mausoleum on the mosque grounds, in which the Fatimid rules were buried. Other important artifacts in the mosque include the oldest known complete manuscript of the Quran bound into one book.
